Windlab Pty Ltd (“Windlab”) is a global renewable energy development company owned by Squadron Energy and Federation Asset Management. It was established to commercialise world leading atmospheric modelling and wind energy assessment technology, developed by Australia’s premier scientific research institute, the CSIRO.

There are 2 internship projects on offer with Windlab

Project 2: Large scale wind farm optimization

Windlab is a wind farm developer. This means we start by looking for new wind farm sites and after we found one, we undertake all the steps necessary to get the wind farm constructed. After the wind farm is constructed Windlab will also manage the wind farm during operation.

Windlab will look for new sites using its proprietary wind mapping technology called WindScape. When a potential new site has been located wind measurements will have to be taken to get an accurate view of the wind resource. Once an accurate wind map has been created the best turbine layout needs to be determined based on this wind map. Based on this layout the energy output of the windfarm can be calculated.

The current tool that we use for these operations does not allow for it to be used in an automatic data pipeline and the tool does not perform well at large windfarm sizes.

In this project modifications to the current tool or new tools will be investigated to ensure we can run our calculations in an automatic data pipeline with good scalability.

Required/preferred technical skills or experience in software languages, environments, platforms.

This project will require C and python knowledge

Required professional/other skills

Depending on how the project runs any mathematical knowledge of optimization will be useful.

Project can be undertaken in-person or remotely.

Traditional In-Person Internship (only for business/organisations based in ACT, Australia)
