The Australian National University has gone above beyond in diversifying the student experience.

Leaving Hobart was difficult for Yaya however a desire to explore computer science is helping her to realise her dreams. After finishing high school, Yaya selected The Australian National University (ANU) as her preferred choice. “I was intrigued by the structure of the software engineering degree at ANU” said Yaya, “It was one of the few degrees in Australia that offered human-centric computing as a major as well as an internationally-recognised engineering accreditation.”

Now settled in Canberra, Yaya is enjoying all the cool and exciting parts of campus life. With a studio apartment on campus and a strong connection to student associations, she is making the most of community networks and activities across the university.

“ANU has gone above and beyond in diversifying the student experience” explains Yaya who goes on to point out that university is not just about learning in lectures, “I have been encouraged to interact and engage with experienced people in my field whether from industry, fellow students or professors.”

In the future, Yaya would like to explore a career in software engineering where she can contribute her knowledge to software solutions that improve accessibility. She also has a keen interest in research and enjoys sharing her knowledge through tutoring. During 2018 Yaya will be a part of the ACT Government ICT Cadetship program and assist students experience all that ANU has to offer through her position as College representative of The Australian National University Students Association (ANUSA).

Yaya’s advice to prospective students, “Being nervous or scared is okay, especially if it’s the first time you’re living away from home! It may take a while to adapt and transition to university life, but the experiences and knowledge you gain will be worth it!”
