Jorge Cardenas

Master of Computing

I am passionate about anything related to computer science, I enjoy challenging myself, love learning and being surrounded by people who are experts in their respective fields.

Making the tough decision to leave his friends and family in Ecuador, Jorge moved to Australia to pursue his passion for computer science. “I chose The Australian National University (ANU) because it is ranked among the top 20 universities in the world, has a strong research department in Artificial Intelligence field, and it is the only university in Australia with a Master of Computing specialising in Artificial Intelligence.”

“My interest in this research started a little bit more than a year ago when I took an Artificial Intelligence course. There I met one of my current supervisors Sylvie Thiebaux. I liked the course so much, that I decided to make my research about one of the topics Sylvie proposed.”

Initially finding the transition to Australia a challenge due to the language barrier, Jorge found that the supportive environment at ANU helped him to settle in. “ANU provides me with an incredible infrastructure, a lot of books and places to study, relax, and have a drink. Additionally ANU provided me with software that I can use for free like the Microsoft office suite.”

“What I like most about my student experience is that I’ve learnt a lot of new concepts and improved my English skills. I also love to meet new people from all over the world.” There are so many diverse and intelligent students at ANU “They motivate me a lot.”

“I believe that my ANU qualification will be a good asset because ANU is a renowned university. The degree is in English which has a huge weight in my country. And finally because the knowledge I acquired here is updated with the latest trends.” After completing his Masters of Computing, Jorge hopes to continue with ANU. “Opportunities I wish to explore at ANU include a PhD postulation in several research topics I am very interested in.”

“My recommendation to postgraduate students starting at ANU is meet as many people as you can. You never know who can help you later. Attend as many events as you can and remember that life is not all about study.”
