CAS R&D activities in the field of solar thermal energy

In the presentation, a general description of the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences will be briefly provided. The progress of research in the Solar Thermal Utilization Group will be presented in detail, including system optimization for concentrated solar power plants, solar concentrators, receivers, thermal energy storage, solar desalination, solar integrated buildings and finally solar collector/heater thermal performance testing technology. Prof Bai will give a detailed description of his research work on air receivers of both volumetric and fluidized-bed types, from the past five years. At the end, there will be an overview of the ongoing projects of the Group. As an organiser of the upcoming SolarPACES conference in Beijing in September, Prof Bai cordially invites ANU Solar Thermal Group to visit the solar power plant and participate in in-depth discussions in Beijing.

Prof Bai's work ranges from microencapsulated PCMs for energy storage, use of silicon carbide foams to enhance CSP receiver heat transfer, high-T thermal storage in concrete, and most recently design and testing of the new Chinese 1MW scale central tower demonstration plant, including two-stage oil-steam energy storage systems and a 1MW air receiver with outlet temperature of 848 °C
