The rise of ‘big data’ is changing the way we live and think, from how people communicate with each other, to how businesses make decisions, to how scientists conduct research. However, today’s database technologies are limited by their ability to understand and manage big data’s potential. This calls for innovative paradigms and solutions that can support efficient and effective data management over large, complex and dynamic databases.
Our research addresses challenges in various areas of data management, including: data modelling and database design; query processing and optimisation; data integration at different levels (record linkage, schema mapping and ontology matching); data provenance; and data cleaning.
We collaborate with several theoretical and experimental research groups in Germany, Austria, New Zealand and China. We also regularly invite industry professionals from leading database technology companies, such as Oracle and Teradata, and the public sector, to share their knowledge and experience with our students.
