Software Engineering

The countless technological innovations that we rely on, for example in transport, telecommunications, finance and energy supply, are complex software-based systems. Software engineering plays a critical role in the development of these systems, but so do many other disciplines. Programmers, developers and software engineers cannot develop and operate these systems on their own.
We develop the theories and practices of a new kind of software engineering with systems and design thinking at its core. We work with other disciplines such as ecology, mental health, general administration and education, to explore the possibilities and mechanisms to conduct software engineering as a multidisciplinary activity. We are working with French and Australian researchers on ecological simulation platforms. We have shown that the models of practice in software engineering are similar to those in mental health—we hope to share experiences to improve practices in both disciplines. By generalising software engineering approaches normally associated with agile software development, we have improved general administrative processes. We are committed to the research-led education of professional software engineers. We work across disciplines to develop, implement and evaluate innovative educational design, which is most notably demonstrated by our TechLauncher initiative.
