Production of sustainable cement
Description
Nick Birbilis, Will Nash (WSP Consulting)
Concrete, a composite of coarse aggregate, fine aggregate and hardened cement, is the most widely used material on earth. The production of conventional cement (ordinary Portland cement) which is the key ingredient in concrete – accounts for the largest single emission source of CO2 on the planet. The project will look at alternatives to cement, for production of cement-like products. Alternatives include mycelium based products, using natural, organic waste as the ‘building’ material.
Goals
Produce materials made from mycelium
Requirements
Suitable for students in engineering with an interest in bio-logical materials.
Keywords
