Hydrogen can help to decarbonise energy exports, industrial processes and heavy freight has been growing nationally, and internationally. In May 2021, the Australian Government approved funding of more than $100 million for three large-scale renewable hydrogen plants, which will be among the biggest in the world.
We are looking for a PhD scholar to work in this fast moving and interdisciplinary area. The candidate will work alongside energy experts from across the university and engage with the
The goal of this transdiciplinary project is to create the expert technical, socio-economic, and political knowledge necessary for Australia to become a major exporter of zero-carbon renewable fuels based on hydrogen.
Based at the School of Engineering, the candidate will work with supervisors to define a PhD project in clean hydrogen, with possible focus areas including, but not limited to: investigating the challenges of integrating large scale renewable hydrogen with existing energy systems in Australia, evaluating demand drivers of Australian hydrogen, and the opportunities for disruptive technologies for production or storage.
The candidate will be supported through the ANU main domestic scholarship round
as well as the application for the Michael Cavenor HDR Supplemental Scholarship
. This top-up scholarship will provide funding to an outstanding domestic HDR candidate who has been awarded a living expense PhD scholarship, and is interested in pursuing the multidisciplinary approach to work undertaken in the Hydrogen Project.

The School of Engineering (SoEN) in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the ANU has an extremely strong research culture with outstanding performance in a wide range of fields including renewable energy and solar hydrogen. The successful candidate will be working alongside world class scientists with expertise relevant to this proposal. This project will be supervised by Dr Fiona J. Beck

and hold a first class Honours degree or Master's degree in Engineering, Physics or related field, and/or has relevant research experience.
