Dr. Nan Yang was born in Hebei, China in December 1982. He received the B.S. degree in Electronics from China Agricultural University, China, in 2005, the M.S. degree in Electronic Engineering from Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), China in 2007, and the Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from a joint programme between the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia and BIT in March 2011. From October 2010 to September 2012, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Wireless and Networking Technologies Laboratory at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Sydney, Australia. From October 2012 to June 2014, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications at UNSW. Since July 2014, he has been with the Research School of Engineering at the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, where he is currently a Future Engineering Research Leadership Fellow and Lecturer. He is also the leader of the wireless and nano-scale communications research team. His general research interests include communications theory and signal processing, with specific interests in collaborative networks, cyber-physical security, resource management, massive multiple-antenna systems, and millimeter wave communications.

In 2014 he received the IEEE ComSoc Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award and the Exemplary Reviewer Certificate of the IEEE Wireless Communications Letters, in 2013 he received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE 77th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC-Spring), and in 2012 and 2013 he received the Exemplary Reviewer Certificate of the IEEE Communications Letters. He is currently serving as the Editor of Transactions on Emerging Telecommunications Technologies, the Guest Editor of two special issues, and the Reviewer of several international prestigious journals. He has also served as a Technical Program Committee (TPC) Member for several IEEE conferences such as IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), IEEE Global Communications Conference (GlobeCOM), IEEE VTC, and the Australian Communications Theory Workshop.

Research Description

My research interests span the broad area of wireless networks with strong emphasis on communication theory, signal processing, and resource management in cooperative communication, multi-antenna communication, and physical-layer-based secure communication. I have resorted, in my research, to methods that have their roots in diverse areas -- probability processes, order statistics, algorithms, and optimization -- with the ultimate goal of identifying and developing new theories to meet the challenges of future wireless data applications.
