CECS hosts 25 students from across Australia and NZ for the annual Summer Scholars program

Tuesday 28 January 2014

While most of us were relaxing over the summer break, over 25 students from universities across Australia and New Zealand came to ANU to participate in the 2014 Summer Scholars program.

Research projects in this year’s program were very broad, from finding a cure for Parkinson’s to improving the accuracy of fitness bands, the Scholars covered a variety of issues.

Bachelor of Engineering (Research & Development) student Conor Horgan spent his summer researching self-assembling peptides (SAPs) for use in neural tissue engineering, under the watchful eye of his supervisor, David Nisbet. His hope is to prove that these materials could be used as an effective treatment for Parkinson’s disease.

“I’ve had a fantastic time being part of the Summer Scholars Program here at ANU. I’ve had the opportunity to explore an exciting an innovative field of engineering, gaining exposure to world class research and the people behind it.”

The group also participated in social programs and conveniently lived in on-campus accommodation.

“This arrangement allowed me to meet lots of interesting people, make amazing new friends and make the most of my time outside of the lab!”

Conor recommends the program to anyone who may be considering undergoing research in either engineering or computer science.

“I’ve been able to get my first taste of the life of a research engineer in a really comfortable and welcoming environment and I’ve had the opportunity to share this experience with other interested and motivated students along the way.”

The students and their projects are supported by a supervisor from the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science. The students are provided with full board and travel expenses, as well as an allowance for the duration of their time at ANU.
