Matt Bullock is a successful serial entrepreneur who transformed his idea into a thriving business with a $6 billion turnover.
Recognising the potential for internet shopping early on, he started online payment gateway business eWAY in 1998. By 2016, the business had more than 25,000 customers and he sold it to US investors for $50 million.
Matt studied a Bachelor of Computer Science at the University of Wollongong, graduating in 1998. He was drawn to computer science by his interest in creating new things.
“I always liked building things. Nowadays, it is faster and easier than ever before to build stuff!”
His experience at university inspired Matt to create the 10kClub scholarship. The award supports passion, innovation and creativity within students at the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science.
“Anyone can get great marks, most cases it’s just about effort. But passion and vision can't be created. Scholarships have always been about marks, not ideas and the person. This is why we are changing the process with 10kClub!” he said.
Matt says the most valuable thing he learnt at university was, “learning and learning how to learn. It is a journey that never ends”.
Matt’s next venture is Spinify, an innovative leaderboard concept to help organisations ‘gamify’ the workplace and motivate staff. His business is already growing rapidly, and has clients worldwide.
He believes that innovation is the way to solve many of humanity’s greatest challenges.
“Entrepreneurs create things and make a difference to the world we live in.”
Matt is passionate about higher education as a pathway for future entrepreneurs. To this day, he actively fosters relationships between universities and industry.
He is an open book when it comes to sharing his experience and mentoring students who are considering applying for the scholarship.
“Got an idea? Want a path after uni? Want to work with someone who has done it all before? I am here to help!”
