School of Engineering & School of Gold and Silversmithing Art Exhibition

As part of a joint collaboration between the ANU School of Art and the Research School of Electrical, Energy and Materials Engineering, we are pleased to invite you to an exhibition of the work done by students of the Manufacturing Technologies course. The exhibition will feature creative, original art pieces in cast Aluminium made by engineering students as they learn about designing for manufacture, and metal casting.

About the project

The Manufacturing Technologies course has partnered with the ANU School of Gold and Silversmithing to create a new, hands-on project that gets students to learn about sand casting by creating original works of art.

Students had to design a novel object that’s suitable for casting, make a pattern, create a sand mould, and finally fill their part by pouring molten Aluminium into their mould.

Students get to see in real time how the consequences of their design decisions effect the outcomes of their parts, and get their hands dirty making and finishing their parts.
