Floating Houses

Logo: Engineers Without Borders

The ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science is hosting a series of free workshops designed for primary school students in years 3-6 and their parents and carers. These workshops will introduce participants to exciting concepts and provide many opportunities to have their questions answered.

In this workshop, students, parents and carers will work in teams to build ‘floating houses’ capable of holding weights above a surface of water. Each team will be assigned a budget which they can use to purchase different materials to strengthen their design. Strong emphasis is placed on the development of ideas and the goal of engineering an effective, low cost solution.

Presented by the ACT chapter of Engineers Without Borders, a not-for-profit organisation aimed at improving the lives of those in disadvantaged communities by working with them to identify their needs and assisting them in implementing appropriate and sustainable solutions.
