Electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage: current results and research plans

Abstract. This presentation will focus on the electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage systems (metal-ion batteries, electrochemical supercapacitors and hybrid capacitors) as well as research plans at a research fellow position at ANU. In the first part of the presentation, the speaker will discuss some of his previous research on energy materials. Transition metal nitrides and oxynitrides will be discussed as prospective materials for supercapacitors. Selected results on alloying-dealloying anode materials for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries will be shown. Possible ways to utilise two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes) in hybrid lithium-ion capacitors will be presented. The speaker will also discuss the application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to the analysis of battery materials. In the second part of the presentation, research plans at ANU will be outlined, including development of sodium-ion and potassium-ion batteries, dual-ion batteries, sodium-ion and potassium-ion capacitors, in-situ TEM experiments with battery materials, scale-up of these technologies and integration of batteries into home energy storage and small scale applications in wearables and Internet of Things.

Biography

Short bio. Dr Alexey Glushenkov received his Master of Physics degree from Novosibirsk State University in Russia in 2003 and his PhD degree (physics, electronic materials engineering) from the Australian National University in 2009. He had research appointments at Boreskov Institute of Catalysis (Russia), ANU, Deakin University and Melbourne Centre of Nanofabrication (all - Australia) as well as Drexel University (the US). Currently, he is a research fellow at the University of Melbourne. Dr Glushenkov’s research interests are centred on electrochemical energy storage in metal-ion batteries, electrochemical supercapacitors and hybrid metal-ion capacitors as well as materials that enable these energy storage cells. He was a winner of 2014 Vice-chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence at Deakin University (early career researcher) and was a 2017 Emerging Investigator of Journal of Materials Chemistry A.  Dr Glushenkov is an author of 60 journal publications and serves as an associate editor of RSC Advances.
