In this lecture Professor Christus Nobrega will present a brief history of the process that led the Brazilian Ministry of Education to recognize the art works, produced within university graduate programs, as knowledge on an equal standing with scientific production. The lecture will reflect on what kind of specificity occurs in artistic knowledge and the ways in which it differs from scientific knowledge. Foregrounding the independance of art as an autonomous area of knowledge to science, Nobrega will reflect on the artist's modes of writing (which differs from scientific writing) and its implications for other areas of knowledge. Finally, he will present a case study of an artistic project developed by the University of Brasília in collaboration with indigenous communities in the Amazon.
Prof. Christus da Menezes da Nóbrega is a visual artist, and Lecturer at the University of Brasilia (UnB). He has a Masters and Doctorate degree in Contemporary Art and is lecturer and coordinator for the Post graduate courses at the Arts Institute of UnB. He is a regular participant in national and international exhibitions in public and private spaces and his works can be found internationally and nationally in public and private collections. In 2015 he represented Brazil in China through the Artistic Residency Program run by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His monumental installation resulting from that residency is currently on exhibition at the 2018 Curitiba Biennial. Over summer 2018/19 he undertook a residency in Canberra, Australia through the Brazilian Embassy, in association with Canberra Contemporary Art Space. He is a leading practitioner in the area of Arts and Education and has written widely on this subject. He is the Brazilian lead on the project “Curating Brasilia Canberra: un/planned a/symmetries”.
