PhD Project with Dolby and ANU

Spatial Sound Control for Testing Multi-channel Audio Devices

The Research School of Electrical, Energy and Materials Engineering at the Australian National University (ANU) invites applications for PhD scholars to work on a major ARC Linkage Project focussed on developing new theory and audio signal processing solutions for testing multi-channel audio devices with spatial sound processing capabilities. The ARC Linkage project is collaboration between ANU and Dolby Laboratories Inc., which is a world leading company in audio commercialization. The successful students will have the rare opportunity to learn from a team of leading researchers at ANU while working closely with industry experts at Dolby, which is a peak body in advancing the audio experience in commercial devices.

The student funded through this project will conduct research on spatial audio reproduction, transducer array calibration and testing of multi-channel audio devices in simulated acoustic environments. The project will involve the development of new theories for spatial audio processing, algorithm development and practical implementation.

Applicants must be eligible for acceptance by ANU into a PhD programme. The PhD eligibility process must have commenced at the time of submitting the scholarship application. The scholarships will be offered to successful applicants, conditional upon acceptance into a PhD programme.

Applicants must have

  • An Honours, Honours equivalence, or have completed a degree in a relevant discipline and have an outstanding record of professional or research achievements since graduation.
  • An Engineering background with deep understanding in Signal Processing basics and Discrete Time Signal Processing.
  • Basic understanding of audio propagation, speakers, microphones etc.

Applicants with prior experience in audio processing are highly encouraged to apply.

Please send your Curriculum Vitae, a copy of your academic record and a 1-2 page outline of: your research skills, experience and understanding of audio signal processing and a summary of your goals for a PhD.
