Intelligence Analysts (APS Level 4, 5, 6) - Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO) - Australian citizens only

The Defence Intelligence Organisation in Canberra is recruiting scientists whom we will train as technical intelligence experts. We are at the cornerstone of Australia’s efforts and help protect the lives of Australians, including the ADF.

What is an intelligence analyst?

You will work in an office, review intelligence that is collected via classified sources, and produce advice that informs Australian Government decisions. Your job is to put together a complex jigsaw, missing half the pieces, and communicate this too busy decision makers.

What about a technical intelligence analyst?

We will give you specialist training to build you into a world expert in a specific technical or scientific field. About twenty percent of your job will involve highly technical analysis, with the remainder general intelligence analysis.

Our key missions:

Advise Government seniors: We regularly brief the Chief of the Defence Force and the Secretary of Defence. As required, we brief the Minister of Defence and the Prime Minister.

Save lives: Our advice protects the ADF and Australians deployed in conflict zones.

Support capability development: We inform Defence programs to develop countermeasures against weapons that may pose a threat as well as support Defence capability planning and ADF operations.

Do I need to know anything about Defence or national security?

No. Most of us were academics, engineers or mathematicians with no prior connection or interest in Defence. All you need is a curiosity in global issues and an aptitude to learn. It is worth reading the Defence White Paper to inform your application.

What are the benefits?

·         Team: You will work exclusively with high achievers of outstanding character.

·         Permanent job: You will have a secure job with work-life balance and good career progression options.

·         Training: We will invest in you and spare no expense.

·         Great work: Our mission is inspiring. The work is fascinating. Your scientific and technical skills are a ticket into a bigger world of global issues and national security.

·         Be an international expert: In time, you will travel overseas to mix with world experts. Just like in academia, but with a very small, select and tight-knit intelligence community.

How do I apply and what are the timeframes?

You will need to submit your application by Monday 15 March 2021. Please see attached information pack.

If you are successful, a lengthy security check is required. You would realistically be starting end-2021 to-mid 2022.

Note applications are open to Australian citizens only.
