Defence Industry Internship Program - Engineering

The Defence Industry Internship Program (DIIP) is an initiative of the Commonwealth Department of Defence.Students are offered an opportunity to undertake a paid 12-week internship with small to medium sized Defence Industry enterprises (SMEs) located throughout all Australian states and territories. Engineering projects are offered in a range of disciplines including:

  • Aerospace/Aeronautical
  • Chemical
  • Civil
  • Data
  • Electrical/electronics
  • Industrial/Manufacturing
  • Machine Learning
  • Maritime
  • Mechatronics
  • Mechanical
  • Software/Systems


To be eligible for an internship you need to:

  • Be an Australian citizen
  • Be a studying an eligible degree (with a strong academic record) currently enrolled full-time at an Australian university)
  • Be able to commit to the full 12-week internship (placements will commence between 15 November 2021 and 4 February 2022)
  • Be able to obtain necessary workplace clearances prior to commencement of the internship
  • Have not previously undertaken a DIIP (or DEIP) internship
