Why choose IT?

The computing industry has always been subject to very rapid change. IT has become an important cog in todays society, and will remain so. ANU will provide you with a combination of practical and theoretic skills to allow you to meet the changes and challenges that you will face in your IT career. You will acquire an excellent technical knowledge of computer systems, programming languages, computer applications, new media and information systems through a hands-on learning approach.

Industry trends show that demand for computing professionals will outstrip the supply of graduates in the next few years so now is the time to embark upon an computing degree.

The ANU Bachelor of IT now has two exciting pathways, designed to meet the needs of all students interested in studying IT. You can now choose conceptual/creative majors and/or technical majors.

What majors can I take?

Conceptual/Creative

  • Information Systems Major
  • New Media Arts Major

Technical

  • Computer Systems Major
  • Software Development Major

You can study one or two IT majors. Click here for program requirements.

Will I get a job?

Everyone knows how important computing is in our world today - underpinning almost everything in our lives. All organisations, large and small, require computing professionals regardless of what their business is.

Did you know that computing jobs are on the increase while the numbers of students studying computing in Australia has fallen! It doesn't take a genius to figure out that high demand and low supply will lead to great opportunities and great salaries for these graduates.

Take a look at these stats:

  • Nearly 100% increase in ICT vacancy index since November 2003
  • 100% employment in ANU IT combined degree graduates (2002/2003 GDS)
  • Given 5 star rating for future employment opportunities by DEWR

Double your career Choices...

Apart from its outstanding national and international reputation, and quality of its degrees, one of the attractive features of ANU is the ability to undertake a 'combined degree'. Generally this means one additional year of study to graduate with two degrees.

Why would you do this?

  • Make yourself more attractive to employers - gain an edge over other job applicants
  • Keep open your career/study options - not many senior high school students are 100% sure what they want to do, why not cover two bases?
  • Pursue that 'other' interest while completing a professional degree with good employment outcomes
