Model Driven Development: Modelpedia, a case study in "eating our own dog food"

Derek Renouf (Chief Technology Officer, Holocentric)

DATE: 2009-08-18
TIME: 16:00:00 - 18:00:00
LOCATION: NICTA - 7 London Circuit

ABSTRACT:
Holocentric takes Model-Driven development seriously. So seriously, in fact, that our next-generation product Modelpedia was designed and mostly generated using the Modeler product.

The result of this work is a platform that includes many of the best aspects of a MOF-based modelling approach, code generation, custom code, web services, Web 2.0 and framework reuse.

However, this was only achieved after overcoming a number of challenges, including market research, creation of utilities, framework evolution, and of course business backing. These challenges and the application of our model-driven development approach are explored.

BIO:
Derek has over 14 years experience developing modelling tools and related products to solve problems.

Derek formed Adaptive Arts in 1993 and subsequently created a generic modelling tool called Simply Objects. The tool was able to relate one object to another, visualize abstractions of this, and so facilitate understanding of the relationships between them. In 2002 Adaptive Arts joined forces with Prism International to create Holocentric, which today focuses on Modelling, business process and related collaborative knowledge-based products.

As Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Holocentric Derek leads the research and development team. He has provided the inspiration and architecture behind Holocentric Modeler and Modelpedia products. He manages the evolution of key product lines while working on new concepts.
