How Does Sean Date a Girl with Her Boyfriend Hiding in the Same Cafe?

ABSTRACT:
What can you do if you are dating a girl in a café while her boyfriend is hiding nearby trying to overhear your conversation? This is indeed a hot research topic in wireless communications. In this talk, the problem of secure communication in wireless environment is introduced. The notion of secrecy capacity characterizes the maximum amount of information that can be transmitted from a transmitter (e.g. you) to an intended receiver (e.g. the girl), without being overheard by an eavesdropper (e.g. her boyfriend). To guarantee secure communication, the transmitter is able to simultaneously transmit information signal to the intended receiver as well as artificial noise to the eavesdropper. We study the optimal power split between the transmissions of the information signal and artificial noise. We show that equal power split works well when there is only one eavesdropper, while more power should be used to generate the artificial noise in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers.



BIO:
Xiangyun (Sean) Zhou received the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) degree in electronics and telecommunications engineering from the Australian National University, Australia, in 2007. He is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree in engineering and information technology at the Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering, the Australian National University. His research interests are in the field of wireless communications, including MIMO systems, ad hoc networks, relay and cooperative communications, and physical layer security in wireless links and networks.
