Constraint Programming: What's all the fuss about?

Professor John Slaney (CSL,RSISE,CESC,ANU. & L&C,NICTA.)

DATE: 2006-02-03
TIME: 11:00:00 - 12:00:00
LOCATION: RSISE Seminar Room, ground floor, building 115, cnr. North and Daley Roads, ANU

ABSTRACT:
Constraint programming has recently become prominent in the local research environment, with NICTA setting up an ambitious five-year project (the G12 platform) and making public claims to be the world leader in this field. This explanatory talk gives my view of what constraint satisfaction and constraint programming are all about, why they are important, what kind of problems they address, what are some of the research issues we face and what the G12 project aims to achieve. The emphasis is on illustration by means of examples rather than on details of the solution methods.

BIO:
John Slaney's interest in constraint solving dates from before constraint programming was invented, his research position at the ANU dates from before RSISE was invented, and his hairstyle dates from 1985. In RSISE, he is currently a professor in the Computer Sciences Lab. In NICTA, he leads the Logic and Computation program and manages the Canberra part of the G12 project.
