CECS Dean's Awards for Teaching Excellence
Staff in the College of Engineering and Computer Science are invited and encouraged to nominate for the Dean's awards for Teaching Excellence. The awards align with the Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Education and the Australian Awards for University Teaching offered by the Australian Learning & Teaching Council (ALTC).
Up to four awards are available annually, each consisting of a Certificate and a prize of $2,000.
There are three categories of award:
- Award for Teaching Excellence
- Award for Excellence in Supervison
- Award for Contributions that Enhance Student Learning
Eligibility
All academic, general, sessional and adjunct staff of the College, full-time or fractional, standard or fixed-term can nominate or be nominated.
Nominations
Staff may nominate themselves and/or be nominated by students and/or other staff. Both team and individual nominations are encouraged. Nominations are considered by a College Selection Committee. The nomination process will involve staff reflecting on their teaching/supervision/contributions and then writing an application that addresses the selection criteria for the relevant award.
The nominee must be a member of staff at the ANU during the period of the Selection Committee's deliberations and decision. Nominations must relate to teaching activities in the College: undergraduate, honours and/or postgraduate. Previously unsuccessful nominees are eligible for renomination.
Essential documentation
All nominees must provide the following documents:
- written statement of no more than four pages, including an overview and an argument addressing one or more of the selection criteria for the award
- two statements of support
- curriculum vitae
- for the Award of Contributions that Enhance Student Learning only, a statement of 25 words or less written by the nominee which provides a description of the contribution.
Optional supporting materials
Selection is based primarily on the written statement addressing the selection criteria. However, nominees may include selected teaching materials supporting their claims against the selection criteria. The relevance of any such material must be made clear in the written statement. Supporting materials are limited to a maximum of two of:
- Website (URL)
- CD ROM or DVD (nominees are encouraged, where possible, to provide digital material via a single URL
- video or audio tape
- 10 pages of printed material
Timeline
- 12 August 2011: closing date for College nominations
- 30 September 2011: closing date for submission of application to Selection Committee
- 28 October 2011: selection committee completes selection process
- 30 November 2011: closing date for nominations for University process
Submission
Applications, together with a copy of the supporting material, should be forwarded to Margaret Wigney, Office of the Dean, CECS, RSISE Building 115, or emailed to: Margaret Wigney no later than 30 September 2011.
