John Richards was appointed Director of the Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering on 20 October 2003, and Dean and Director of the College of Engineering and Computer Science in 2006. Prior to commencing at RSISE he was for five years Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President of the Australia National University. He previously worked for eleven years at the University College, Australian Defence Force Academy, where he served as Rector from July 1996 to September 1998. He was also Head of the School of Electrical Engineering (June 1987 to July 1996) and Deputy Rector (December 1991 to July 1996). Professor Richards graduated from the University of New South Wales with the degrees of Bachelor of Engineering (Hons 1) and Doctor of Philosophy, both in Electrical Engineering, in 1968 and 1972 respectively. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, NY. From 1972 to 1977 Professor Richards was with the Department of Electrical Engineering at James Cook University of North Queensland returning to the staff of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of New South Wales in late 1977. In 1981 he was appointed Director of the University's new Centre for Remote Sensing, a position he held concurrently with his post in Electrical Engineering until his move to the University College in June 1987. He has held sabbatical positions at Purdue University and the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is an Emeritus Professor of the University of New South Wales.
